3.4.5 Explain the software involved in networking.

Not a whole lot about this in the text book. But really, it harkens back on what has so far been covered. For any kind of technological system to function, we need hardware and software. In terms of networks, there are lots of nifty pieces of kit that are fun to learn about. But in terms of software, what do you need? Networking software, that's what. More importantly then is what networking software is responsible for: it takes its part in doing all of the afore-mentioned things, particularly those things associated with:
- transferring information (in packets) back and forth across networks
- assuring data integrity during this transferral - see 3.4.6 for more specifics
- assuring data security during this transferral - see 3.4.5 for more specifics
