Push and Pull Technologies

  1. Push, or server push, describes a style of Internet-based communication where the request for a given transaction is initiated by the publisher or central server. It is contrasted with pull/get, where the request for the transmission of information is initiated by the receiver or client.

Firslty, we could think of the pushing and pulling as being of information about the app or pushing or pulling of the app itself.

Push Technologies -

"Pushing" the advertising for the banking app:

So using push technology to pursuade the bank's users to download apps specific to their devices, the bank would be sending e-mails, or advertising or, along with likely sending a link for downloading the app.

This would be a bit more than just communicate with their customers that it would be better for them to download those apps for their banking purposes.

"Pushing" the banking app itself:

The bank itself is somehow initializing the downloading of that app. Perhaps when it happens, the user is just prompted to allow or not that download.

Another way would be for the app to come free (yet, really, pushed) already installed on a certain device.

Pull Technologies -

This would be where the customer initates something, so it could be clicking on a webpage advertisment for the banking app, or downloading a free trial of it. Or maybe a link to the download of the app, free "for a limited time only" is offered to the user.

But one way or the other, if it's "pull", it is the customer who initiates the download of the app.

IN summary, pull is where you have the option, and push is where you must use the app in order to use the service being offered by, in this case the mobile bank service.
